Two couples are suspected of having engaged in extensive drug trafficking, in Cournonterral, a town of 5,000 inhabitants, located near Montpellier (Hérault), the services of the Hérault gendarmerie said on Tuesday.

Two people were placed in pre-trial detention, and two others under judicial supervision, pending their appearance in court.

They were arrested on May 16, "in the middle of the harvest" by soldiers from the Castelnau-le-Lez platoon.

150,000 euros of narcotics

At the beginning of the year, the gendarmes had opened an investigation, on a probable indoor cultivation of cannabis, in Cournonterral.

The numerous investigations had made it possible to precisely locate a hangar, as well as four suspects.

A search revealed 435 plants of cannabis, 12 kg of heads being dried and 74 g of cannabis powder, for an estimated value of more than 150,000 euros.

In addition, the gendarmes seized 12,000 euros in cryptocurrency, more than 5,000 euros in cash, two weapons and a “stolen and made-up” vehicle.
