Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in the capital Ottawa on May 30 that the federal government has submitted a bill to Parliament to ban the import, sale and transportation of handguns across the country.

Several ministers, including the Minister of Public Security, Marco Mendicino, and the Minister of Justice, David Lametti, attended the press conference.

The bill, while not a blanket ban on handguns, would effectively limit the number of handguns in Canada.

"In other words, we're limiting the handgun market," Trudeau said.

The new measure, aimed at curbing gun crime, is seen as the Liberal government's latest and boldest legislation to control gun crime in Canada.

The bill is expected to pass in parliament as the Liberal Party and the NDP form a coalition in the House of Representatives with a majority in parliamentary votes.

The legislation comes after multiple mass shootings in the United States, including the Texas elementary school shooting.

Trudeau said Canadians are "very united" in their desire to reduce gun violence at home.
