Left-wing opponent Gustavo Petro easily won the first round of the presidential election in Colombia on Sunday May 29 and will face an independent candidate, Rodolfo Hernandez, in the second round on June 19, according to provisional official results published in evening.

Gustavo Petro cumulates 40.33% of the votes, ahead of Rodolfo Hernandez (28.14%), indicate these results given by the National Register, in charge of the organization of the ballot, after the counting of more than 97% of the ballots.

The conservative candidate Federico Gutierrez, representing the traditional Colombian right, is in third position with 23.90%.

While Federico Gutierrez was considered throughout the campaign as the challenger of the favorite Petro, these results in the form of a surprise mark the historic defeat of the traditional right, in power for decades in Colombia.

According to the National Register, the ballot took place "normally" throughout the territory.
