The Turkish state cracked down on regime-critical media in the mid-2010s.

Bülent Kenes was the editor-in-chief and columnist of Today's Zaman, an independent English-language newspaper, and was repeatedly accused of criticizing President Erdogan.

- Every day I was at the police station or with the prosecutor.

In the end, it was impossible to work, says Bülent Kenes.

Since 2016, he has lived in Sweden, where he fled after the military coup attempt the same year.

According to Turkish pro-government media, Bülent Kenes is on the list of people Turkey wants to see extradited from Sweden.

And he is worried that the government will accommodate Turkey in order for the application to NATO to be approved.

- In normal cases, I had never thought that I could be extradited, but this is politics at a high level.

I'm worried, he says.
