Russia declares full control of the town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine

The Russian army announced that it had completely taken control of the small, strategically important town of Lyman, east of the Donbass region of Ukraine.

"Through the joint action of units of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Russian Armed Forces, the town of Krasnyi Lyman was completely liberated from Ukrainian nationalists," Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Saturday.

It is worth noting that Krasnyi Lyman is the old name of the Lyman, which dates back to the times of the Soviet Union.

Moscow-allied separatists had already declared control of the town on Friday.

Today, Saturday, the Ukrainian General Staff did not acknowledge the fall of the town.

Lyman is of strategic importance as it is the meeting point of railways, and a land link to the population centers of Severodonetsk and Lysehchansk to the east, and Kramatorsk to the southwest.

Konashenkov also spoke of heavy air and missile strikes on the towns of Bakhmut and Soledar in Donetsk Oblast, and said command posts and ammunition depots were hit, among other things.
