The Social Democrats have always been in the majority in Surahammar's municipal council, and that was also the result after the 2018 election, that is, until a year ago.

Then the bourgeois opposition instead got a majority together with the Sweden Democrats.

But the road to the change of power was lined with upsetting events.

Deaths and cooperation problems

It started with the chairman of the municipal board, Johanna Skottman (S), dying after a period of illness, halfway into the term of office.

She was succeeded by Chris Marlowe (S).

After the shift, internal reports, which SVT has read, showed that there were cooperation problems between both politicians and officials in Surahammar's municipal administration.

It culminated in 2020, when the Social Democrats chose to break off cooperation with the Center Party.

C and SD in the board - Annie Lööf dissatisfied

But instead of bringing together a new majority, as the Social Democrats in Surahammar had hoped for, it was a change of power.

Surahammar then became the only municipality in the country where the Center Party and the Sweden Democrats rule together.

Something that center leader Annie Lööf was quick to apologize for.
