The object was spotted by customs officers who carried out checks and identified possible counterfeits.

When they came across the object, the agents asked if the ammunition had been neutralized.

But the seller was unsure of himself.

A harmless shell in the end

The decision was therefore made to evacuate a large part of the flea market in order to establish a security cordon and warn the demining services.

Eventually, the detonation system proved harmless and the fair was able to resume.

“A shell from the 14-18 war, which was not neutralized, could have caused carnage”, explained to our colleagues Cédric Orgeret, Divisional Head at Amiens customs.

The seller also acknowledged to the gendarmes that he had other weapons and ammunition at his home.
