China News Service, Beijing, May 26 (Reporter Zhang Weiran) Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin hosted a regular press conference on May 26.

A reporter asked: According to reports, NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg said in an interview on the 24th that China is an "authoritarian" power. China and Russia have called on NATO to stop its expansion and dissolution, which poses a threat to NATO's security. So NATO has to respond.

What is China's comment?

Wang Wenbin: For a period of time, the NATO Secretary-General has been making groundless accusations and smearing attacks on China, making reckless comments on China's political system and domestic and foreign policies, and promoting the "China threat theory". China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this.

On the one hand, NATO calls on its member states to increase military spending, requiring member states to meet or exceed the level of 2% of GDP, and on the other hand makes irresponsible remarks about China's normal defense and military modernization, which is a typical double standard.

China adheres to the path of peaceful development, firmly pursues a national defense policy that is defensive in nature, and always maintains its nuclear force at the minimum level required for national security.

China's defense spending as a percentage of GDP has remained at around 1.3% for a long time, far below the world average. China does not use force to threaten other countries like some NATO countries, does not engage in military alliances, does not export ideology, and has never extended its hands to others. At home, we don’t take the initiative to fight trade wars, and we don’t unreasonably suppress companies from other countries. How can we talk about “China threatens NATO security”?

NATO has publicly stated many times that NATO's position as a regional alliance has not changed, neither seeking geographical breakthroughs nor seeking to expand its membership in other regions.

However, in recent years, NATO has continued to enter the Asia-Pacific region. Some NATO member states have been sending planes and warships to the waters surrounding China to conduct military exercises, creating tension and provoking conflicts.

NATO continues to break through regions and fields, and advocates a "new cold war" of group confrontation. The international community should be highly vigilant and firmly opposed to this.

We urge Secretary-General Stoltenberg to stop spreading smearing remarks against China and abandon the practice of drawing ideological lines.

NATO has already messed up Europe, stop trying to mess up Asia and mess up the whole world.
