The invasive species giant locust has a disturbing spread in the county, according to the county administrative board.

The plant is both poisonous and a threat to biodiversity.

Right now, the company Road and Environment, on behalf of the County Administrative Board, is working to combat the plant.

- All green parts contain a chemical ingredient that has an ability to creep into the skin and if you get sunlight on that skin then you get burn-like problems that can persist for several years.

So you have to be very careful, says Mats Grimfoot who is the supervisor.

Fighting has been going on for several years

The control of the plant is ongoing in the nature reserves Hornån, Västanå and Sjöbegen.

It is a work that will last for up to ten years because the seeds of the giant locust can live in the ground for the same length of time.

Therefore, the county administrative board needs to return to the same places to remove any new plants.

In the last ten years, we have seen that our knowledge of the species has increased.

Spread has been fairly constant.

The more plants that grow and flower, the faster the spread will take place in the future, says Niklas Lindell who is an administrator for invasive alien species at the county administrative board.
