More than 16 months after US President Joe Biden took office, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is set to deliver a much-anticipated address Thursday that outlines the US approach to China.

According to a senior US official, Blinken will reiterate in his speech that there has been no change in the US commitment to the one-China policy.

The US official said that the United States has a strategy that will enable it to move forward in a long-term competition with China effectively and responsibly.

He stressed that Washington has always been clear that it is ready to work with China in areas where the interests of the two countries do not conflict.

The official pointed out that Blinken will also address his country's concerns about China's human rights practices, including its dealings with the Uighur minority in Xinjiang, China's efforts to control key technology areas, and creating economic dependencies to limit the freedom of other countries.

The senior US official pointed out that the United States is managing competition with China by maintaining open lines of communication, starting with the level of the two countries' presidents.

Analysts, investors and market experts looking for detailed guidance are likely to be disappointed, as the US Secretary of State is expected to use his speech today to explain current policies rather than reveal any bold new direction.
