A 72-year-old man died on Tuesday morning after a balcony of the Hôtel des Terrasses building in Saint-Égrève (Isère) collapsed.

The victim was the owner of the premises, transformed into a residence of ten apartments, which he had recently purchased.

He was downstairs with a friend when he stepped onto the balcony overlooking the River Vence below.

A fatal fall of several meters

The septuagenarian fell about five meters after the slab partially collapsed under his weight, reports

The Samu, a unit specializing in the rescue and clearing of firefighters and specialists from the group of reconnaissance and intervention in perilous environments were quickly dispatched to the scene.

The victim was in cardiopulmonary arrest when they arrived and could not be saved.

A gendarmerie investigation will have to determine the precise circumstances in which the owner died.
