The mountain fox is mainly found in the areas around Hemavan and the Jämtland and Härjedal mountains and has increased in number after more rodents and lemmings arrived in the mountains.

- Mountain foxes were hunted hard at the beginning of the last century, it was the fur they wanted to access.

At most, 10,000 individuals were counted at the beginning of the 20th century, says Johan Wallén, who is a research assistant at the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University.

"Had a wolf enclosure that did not work"

At the same time as the zoo is talking about conserving the mountain fox, Skansen chose last year to kill four young wolves and this aroused criticism from many.

- We had a wolf enclosure that did not work.

No other zoo in Europe could receive the wolves either and then we were forced to kill the wolves, says Tomas Frisk who is head of the zoological department at Skansen.
