• Tuesday evening, the prefecture issued a new order putting the department on drought alert.

  • The State justifies this choice "because of a persistent rainfall deficit" and invites everyone "to be vigilant in their water consumption, whatever its origin".

The rain that has fallen in recent days has not been enough.

One would have thought that the storms that hit Ille-et-Vilaine could have helped to alleviate the drought situation experienced by the department.

It is not so.

Worse, on Tuesday evening, the prefecture issued a new decree putting the department on drought alert, when only the “vigilance” stage had so far been activated.

The State justifies this choice "because of a persistent rainfall deficit" and invites everyone "to be vigilant in their water consumption, whatever its origin".

The major problem facing Ille-et-Vilaine is the absence of so-called "effective" rainfall this winter.

Late and too short, the season presented a significant deficit, limiting the recharge of underground resources.

“The rainfall deficit over these first four months is thus gradually increasing from 20% in the north to 40% in the south of the department.

The low rainfall has an impact on the flow rates of the rivers, some of them crossing, from this month of May, the thresholds for triggering the alert”, insists the prefecture.

Drinking water reserves are naturally seeing their volume gradually drop "particularly early this year".

New restrictions with this order

The short-term forecasts not allowing to turn to optimism, the prefect Emmanuel Berthier issued a new decree on May 24.

A text which is accompanied by numerous restrictions or prohibitions: cleaning of terraces, vehicles, roofs, emptying or filling of swimming pools, watering of sports fields, gardens or green spaces, but also the supply of showers beach and fountains.

Fire drills are also suspended.
