The prefect of Isère, who said he was ready to take legal action if the Grenoble city council adopted the new swimming pool regulations authorizing in particular the wearing of the burkini, kept his word.

He seized the administrative court of a secularism summary;

referred which will be examined this Wednesday afternoon.

The new swimming pool regulations, which sparked heated exchanges between elected officials, including within the majority, were adopted with a short head on the evening of May 16.

This text lifts all the prohibitions in force for ten years and now opens the door to monokini, burkini but also to swimming in a T-shirt.

It is due to come into force on June 1.

Instructions from Gérald Darmanin

The prefect of Isère had explained that he had received instructions from the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin relating to the seizure of the court in the event of the adoption of the new regulation.

He considered that his “manifest objective is to give in to communitarian demands with religious aims [and that he] appears to contravene the principle of secularism laid down by the law of 1905 as well as the provisions of the law of August 24, 2021 reinforcing respect of the principles of the Republic”.

The municipal opposition, which also filed an appeal before the same court, indicated on Tuesday for its part that it intended "in the event of rejection of the request (…) to develop all the other means of law which justify the suspension and the 'cancellation of this decision' at a hearing scheduled for May 31.
