After the recent revelations about the Chinese detention camps in Xinjiang province, will anyone in this country have the sad courage to dismiss this detailed information as fabrications by some "anti-Chinese forces"?

Much of what has now come to light through pictures and police documents was known in outline.

Nevertheless, the official Chinese version that the camps are “schools” in which the residents are taught professional skills has also met with many open ears.

China has taken things to the extreme with the absurd claim that inmates went to the camps voluntarily to free themselves from (religious) extremism.

Do companies take action?

The reality is much more cruel.

A systematic attempt is being made here to deprive a people, the Uyghurs, of their cultural and religious identity.

The Chinese authorities do not even shy away from family detention.

Many of the camps are suspected of forcing their inmates to work for foreign companies.

For them, at the latest, the question of possible consequences arises.

After all, China has pledged in the investment agreement with the EU that it will make "efforts" to ratify international conventions against forced labor.

Opening the camp gates in Xinjiang would be a start.
