Erdogan's Turkey has previously been open in its opposition to the two Nordic countries Finland and Sweden joining NATO.

The reason given is the countries 'alleged support for the banned Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG.

The country now demands that support for "terrorism" cease and that sanctions against military exports to Turkey be lifted.

- Sweden's ongoing sanctions against us are something we absolutely can not put aside.

Turkey's legitimate expectations of (an end to) support for terrorism and sanctions must be met, Erdogan said in a speech on Monday.

Sweden introduced an arms embargo against Turkey in October 2019 in response to Turkish military operations in northern Syria.
