The United States is "playing with fire", warned Beijing on Monday, reacting to statements by the American president earlier in the day.

Visiting Tokyo, Joe Biden had warned that the United States would defend Taiwan in the event of an invasion of the island by China which, according to him, "flirts with danger" by multiplying military maneuvers.

The United States is "using the 'Taiwan map' to contain China and will burn itself there," said Zhu Fenglian, the spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, often described as the Chinese government.

“We urge the United States (…) to avoid sending the wrong signals to the separatist forces” in Taiwan, also declared Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We agreed with the one China policy, we signed it (…) but the idea that (Taiwan) could be taken by force is simply not appropriate”, had specified the president. American.

"Our policy has not changed," retorted US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Monday.
