A random attack in the New York subway... and a man was shot dead

A 48-year-old man was shot dead in the chest while riding a New York City subway car on Sunday, in the latest in a series of indiscriminate attacks on the city's transportation system.

New York Police Department Chief Kenneth Corrie told a news briefing that the unknown gunman escaped when the train arrived at a station in Manhattan and is still at large.

He added: "Initial investigation reveals that the suspect was walking back and forth in the same train carriage before unprovoking a gun and shooting the victim at close range while the train was crossing the Manhattan Bridge."

Corrie said the gunman, who was described only as a large, dark-skinned man in a hooded T-shirt and baggy pants, fled when the train set off for the next stop.

Police said the suspect and the victim did not appear to know each other and had no interaction before the shooting.

The victim, who was not identified by police, was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

New York City witnessed an upsurge in violence, including a series of indiscriminate attacks on subway commuters.

The transient violence involved passengers pushed onto bars from sidewalks, including a Manhattan woman whose murder was seen as part of an uptick in hate crimes against Asian Americans.

On April 12, Al-Madjir armed with two smoke bombs and opened fire on a New York City subway car, injuring more than 20 people.

Authorities arrested the suspect, who they identified the next day as 62-year-old Frank James.
