Italian government websites down, suspected of Russian hacking

A group of Italian government websites lost access to the Internet early Friday morning after a cyber attack, which the authorities attributed to the Russian hacking group Kilnet.

The affected websites include those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, and the Ministry of Culture.

A spokesman for the Federal Police confirmed the occurrence of the hacking operation, adding that a special team had taken over the case.

It was not possible to know the exact number of affected sites.

It is noteworthy that the "Kilent" group attacked other institutions in the past, including the websites of the German government, and computers belonging to the final show of the Eurovision Song Contest "Eurovision" last weekend, but the attack targeting the computers of the Eurovision competition was repelled.

According to media reports, the group then attacked and disrupted Italian police websites.
