Fire halts take-off and landing at Geneva airport

A fire broke out near Geneva airport on Friday, disrupting the take-off and landing of the Swiss aviation hub.

No plane has been able to take off or land since 5.35 pm due to thick smoke, an airport spokesman told dpa.

A video clip documented the flames and large explosions during the blazes.

The Swiss "tgd" website reported that the explosion occurred in the future building of the International Police and the Federal Center for Asylum Seekers.

The site indicated that the fire occurred at the end of a runway at Geneva Airport, and confirmed that thick black smoke rose and was visible from several locations in the town.

He pointed out that five explosions occurred as a result of the explosion of gas cylinders, indicating that the debris flew during the explosions.
