Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202207:00 a.m., May 19, 2022

Between 1949 and 1962, the Soviet Union conducted a series of nuclear tests in the city of Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan.

Her goal: to build a weapon even more formidable than the American atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945. In this new episode of the "At the heart of History" podcast, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach paints the portrait of the craftsman who enabled these experiments to see the light of day: Andreï Sakharov, inventor of the hydrogen bomb.

And future Nobel Peace Prize.

In Semipalatinsk, this city located on the borders of Kazakhstan, the first explosion of the bomb created by Andreï Sakharov is planned for August 1953. But a few days before the test, it is decided that it will not take place in the air, but on earth!

What will be its impact on the inhabitants of the surrounding area?

And on the surrounding ecosystem?

In this new episode of the podcast "At the heart of history", Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach pursues the portrait of Andreï Sakharov, father of the Soviet H-bomb.
