According to reports, at the meeting on the 18th, the Japan Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission discussed the draft review of the Fukushima nuclear sewage discharge plan, which includes the detection method of the radioactive substance tritium contained in the nuclear sewage before discharge to the sea, and the environmental and effects on the human body, etc.

As a result of the discussion, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission believed that there was no problem with the content of the review, and approved TEPCO's plan to discharge nuclear sewage into the sea.

The plan is expected to be formally adopted after soliciting public opinions, the report said.

TEPCO plans to officially start discharging nuclear sewage in the spring of 2023.

According to the plan, the nuclear sewage will be diluted with sea water and then discharged about 1 km offshore through an undersea tunnel.

TEPCO filed an application for review in December 2021.

At the end of April 2022, TEPCO started the construction of the outfall of the submarine tunnel for the discharge of nuclear sewage.

On April 13, 2021, the Japanese government decided to filter and dilute a large amount of nuclear sewage from Fukushima and discharge it into the sea.

The move was strongly opposed by the Fukushima Prefecture Fisheries Association and the National Federation of Fisheries Associations of Japan.
