Since neither of the two favorites received more than 50 percent of the votes, there will be a second round of elections between the two on June 8, the Church of Sweden states.

The winner will take over as archbishop of the Church of Sweden from Antje Jackelén, who will retire on 30 October.

A total of 876 people are eligible to vote in this year's archbishop election, including the church board and elected representatives in the Church of Sweden's thirteen dioceses.

The new archbishop will be received in a service in Uppsala Cathedral on 4 December.
