According to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Sweden can count on a smooth path into NATO.

But the process can be slowed down by several obstacles.

An approval from 30 NATO countries can go quickly - from days up to a week, according to Björn Fägersten, senior researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute.

After that, the so-called ratification process awaits.

Something that can take time.

- The biggest risk is if some countries choose to use the veto power as a way to gain other advantages, or that the countries are pressured by third powers, for example that Russia would try to influence existing members.

Turkey has already expressed its opposition.

According to observers, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's goal has been to pursue his own interests, with no direct links to European security policy.

The requirement: No nuclear weapons on Swedish soil

Sweden's step into a military alliance with nuclear weapons as the doctrine is something that has characterized the NATO debate.

The question has been how Sweden's role will be affected in disarmament issues.

- The fact that we will be part of the nuclear umbrella with the US nuclear weapons makes it perhaps more difficult to pursue a strong policy regarding total disarmament in the short term.

However, it should be noted that Sweden's work for disarmament is already taking place in collaboration with a number of NATO countries, says Jakob Hallgren.

Five NATO countries have nuclear weapons equipped in their areas.

In connection with this weekend's yes message, the Social Democrats demanded a reservation on the deployment of nuclear weapons on Swedish soil.

- It must be based on acceptance from the host country in order for nuclear weapons to be stationed.

I consider this to be unlikely, it has not been relevant in the Swedish debate.

Uncertain during the application phase

No one knows for sure what concrete counter-reactions can be expected from Russia in the near future.

According to Björn Fägersten, Sweden is not subject to influence during the application process itself, as the government has already decided.

At the same time, several countries have promised their support in the event of a military attack on Sweden while the application is being processed.

- One can hope that the protection is declaratory, that is, that the countries that say they will support us during the phase actually do so, says Björn Fägersten.
