On August 19, 1812, General Gudin (1768-1812) was wounded by a cannonball during the Battle of Valoutina Gora, Russia.

Three days later, he died from his injuries.

Napoleon lost one of his most brilliant generals, who had distinguished himself during the battles of Auerstaedt, Eylau or Wagram.

When he died, General Gudin's heart was removed and brought back to France, while his remains were buried in Russian lands.

207 years later, in July 2019, a team of archaeologists found the general's grave while excavating in a public garden in Smolensk.

On December 2, 2021, the day of commemoration of the Battle of Austerlitz, General Gudin entered the Invalides and reunited with his brothers in arms.
