The United States is reestablishing a permanent military presence in Somalia.

President Joe Biden approved the transfer of almost 500 soldiers to the African country, government officials said on Monday.

This should make the fight against the Islamist Al-Schabaab militia more effective.

The Ministry of Defense stated that the soldiers were not intended for combat missions, but should train and advise Somali units.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States withdrew around 700 soldiers from the African country in December 2020.

Since the overthrow of ruler Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has not had a strong central government.

Al-Shabaab is held responsible for many bombings.

They are trying to overthrow the government and set up a state in which a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law will apply.
