Dieudonné's legal battle continues.

The Franco-Cameroonian polemicist, sentenced on appeal in Switzerland for "racial discrimination" for remarks made during his shows, will "probably" file an appeal before the country's supreme judicial authority, his lawyer said on Monday.

"It has been noted the judgment of the appeals chamber to maintain the conviction pronounced at first instance against the humorist Dieudonné and we will probably appeal to the federal court", indicated his lawyer Pascal Junod.

First conviction in Switzerland

Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala, already convicted in France on numerous occasions for racial insults or incitement to hatred, was sentenced in July 2021 at first instance in Geneva for "racial discrimination, defamation and insult" to pay 30,600 francs ( €28,200).

This was his first conviction in Switzerland.

His conviction was confirmed by the Geneva criminal appeal and review chamber in a judgment of April 28, which the daily “La Tribune de Genève” revealed on Sunday.

Holocaust denier in a show

At issue in this case, the denial remarks on the gas chambers that Dieudonné made one of his characters make in his show between January 4 and 6, 2019, at the Théâtre de Marens in Nyon, and the 28 and 29 June 2019, at the CAC Voltaire Cinema Animation Center in Geneva.

During his trial, Dieudonné claimed that it was not he who said the phrase during the show, but his "character".

The argument had been swept away by justice.

“This is a first in Switzerland which sees the condemnation, through a fictional character in a sketch, of a comedian.

Even France, which has a much more repressive legislative arsenal than Switzerland, did not make a fool of itself by opening criminal proceedings against this show,” indicated Pascal Junod.

“Insult” and “defamation”

Dieudonné was also found guilty of "insulting" the Swiss Intercommunity Coordination Against Anti-Semitism and Defamation (Cicad) for remarks made about this non-profit association during the performance of June 28, 2019.

The polemicist was also convicted of "defamation" for remarks made on November 22, 2019 concerning the secretary general of the Cicad, Johanne Gurfinkiel, during an interview given on a YouTube channel in Geneva.
