27 Lund students will soon graduate and become the next generation of midwives.

But the picture they got of maternity care is not attractive and as it looks now, few choose to go there - even fewer who choose childbirth in Malmö or Lund.

- When you have just received a driving license, you do not want to start on the autobahn, says student Stina Broman.

Her classmate Helena Lave agrees, she would like to work on the birth but chooses Malmö for Ystad.

In the clip, midwifery students Helena Lave and Stina Broman talk about why they opt out of childbirth in Malmö and Lund.

Actions underway

- I know that you feel insecure about starting work in Malmö, we have to face it in a much better way, says Pia Teleman, operations manager for gynecology at SUS.

She says that they are currently working on several measures.

Among other things, they offer longer learning phases with mentors in order to get a clear introduction.

At the same time, they are reviewing whether staff who are 65+ at the birth, and who still want to stay, can get a role where they are more accessible to new ones.

Malmö and Lund will become more attractive

According to Pia Teleman, there is a general shortage of midwives in the country and more people need to be trained.

She says that women's healthcare has managed to hire some this autumn and at the same time is working to make Malmö and Lund's deliveries a more attractive workplace.

- We hope that you can dare to come to us and come back because so much is happening now with a change in our way of working.

We must start from how we have worked before, both because midwives need to be allowed to work in a different way and because childbirth requires a different maternity care.
