The government has now made a historic and formal decision that Sweden should apply for membership in NATO.
According to Johan Persson (S) who is a municipal councilor in Kalmar municipality, membership means increased security and an improved security situation for the inhabitants of the Baltic Sea.
- If we all around the Baltic Sea are members of NATO, then we help each other in different ways.
And in that way, the deterrent ability is very high.
I think it will help Sweden not to end up in war, says Johan Persson (S).

Öland votes to join NATO
Increases security on Öland
Previously, the top politicians in Borgholm and Mörbylånga municipality have sent a joint letter to the Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist (S) where, among other things, questions were asked about the security situation for Öland.
The concern was based on the fact that they did not arm themselves militarily, despite the fact that it is as close to the Russian exclave Kaliningrad as Gotland does.
Despite the fact that they have not yet received a reply to their letter, the municipal councilor in Borgholm, Ilko Corkovic (S), believes that the NATO decision means increased security for the people of Öland.
- It may benefit us the most considering that we are located on the Baltic Sea and I think that Öland and Småland will feel safer with this decision.
