The accident occurred after one of the vehicles refused to stop at a police checkpoint, where the driver was driving away from the police patrol at high speed.

- One of the vehicles was to be checked by a patrol at 22.33 but did not want to stop but instead increased the speed and drove away from the patrol south of Nyköping.

When the patrol began pursuing, it was discovered that the car had collided with another car at 22.47, says Peter Ström, duty officer at Police Region East.

It is unclear what caused the collision, but the car kept a high speed as it drove away from the police patrol.

- It is difficult to know if it was, but it was high speeds before the police patrol discovered the accident, says Peter Ström.

The car that drove away from the police patrol caught fire after the crash and the driver was taken by ambulance to hospital but was transported shortly afterwards by ambulance helicopter to Karolinska Hospital in Solna.

- I do not fully understand how seriously injured the other three are more than that it is serious and that they have been taken to hospital, says Peter Ström.

The E4 is now closed in both directions at the accident site and will probably be kept closed throughout the night.
