The Social Democrats (SPD), which are part of the ruling coalition in Germany, lost the elections to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the state parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is considered the most densely populated land of Germany. This is evidenced by the exit polls that were published by the ARD TV channel after the closing of polling stations.
As TASS notes with reference to the data, the SPD showed the lowest result in its history in the region.
According to preliminary information, the CDU is gaining 35% of the vote, and the Social Democrats - 27.5%.
At the same time, the Greens received 18.5% of the vote, and the Alternative for Germany - about 6%.
The Free Democratic Party gained about 5%.
