Jacobs, surprise double gold medalist last summer at the Tokyo Olympics in the 100m and 4x100m, will compete at the Italian meeting in his first 100m in competition since these Olympic coronations.

The Italian sprinter, after his recent intestinal problems, "announced not being able to run the planned distance of the 200 meters", but "will be at the start of the 100 meters", underlined the organizers of the Savona meeting in a press release.

Also registered in the 100m are two other members of the Italian Olympic gold medalist relay in Tokyo, Lorenzo Patta and Fausto Desalu, as well as the Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut, who will also make his comeback in the 100m, they said.

It was in Savona that Jacobs first broke below 10 seconds in the 100 meters, in May 2021, running in 9 sec 95/100, less than three months before winning Olympic gold in Japan in 9 sec 80/100 (European record).

Jacobs, 27, had originally planned to race his first 100m from Tokyo last week in Nairobi and was due to line up in Savona for the 200m, a distance he has rarely tested himself at.

He is also expected on May 28 in the 100m in Eugene (United States), as part of the Diamond League, on the track where the Worlds will take place in July.

The European record holder had prematurely ended his season last summer just after the Games, citing "mental" fatigue.

He resumed this year with the indoor season on 60 m.

He notably became world champion in this distance this winter.
