The government-critical protests in Sri Lanka started after months of power outages and shortages of fuel, food and medicine.

Most of the protests have been peaceful, but in the capital Colombo at least 78 people have been injured in an outbreak of violence, according to authorities.

The Prime Minister resigns

On Monday, the country's prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, announced that he was resigning following mass protests against the government's handling of the economic crisis, reports the BBC.
