"At 1:37 a.m. on May 9, Orange County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call from the 2500 block of Egret Shores Drive in Orlando, regarding a shooting. A man, identified as Adreian Payne , born on February 19, 1991, was shot and pronounced dead in hospital," said the statement from local authorities posted on Twitter.

Police added that the 29-year-old suspected shooter, who remained at the scene, was taken into custody for first-degree murder.

No information has been released about the motive for this tragedy.

Former college basketball star, when he played for Michigan State, Adreian Payne, who played as a strong winger and pivot, was drafted in 2014, in 15th position by the Atlanta Hawks without imposing himself there.

His career has made him a globetrotter, then passing through Minnesota (2014-2017), Orlando (2018), Greece, Panathinaikos (2018 and 2019) with a return trip to China in the meantime (Nanjing) , before playing two seasons with Villeurbanne in Elite (2019-2020).

"Terribly shocked by the announcement of the death of Adreian Payne (...) Difficult to find the words when you lose a family member... All our thoughts for his loved ones", tweeted Asvel.

Payne then joined the Turkish team of Ormanspor, then that, Lithuanian, of Utena, before returning to the United States where he was without a club.
