In our “Mixed Zone” podcast, we go back in time with the series “Once upon a time, in the history of sport…”.

This time, the episode is linked to the final of the Coupe de France football between Nantes and Nice, which is being played this Saturday evening, at the Stade de France.

We come back to the first final of this competition inaugurated in 1918 under the name of the Charles-Simon cup in tribute to a pioneer of football in France, who died in combat during the First World War.

A war which, during the final, on May 5, 1918, is not yet over.

This conflict also deprives FC Lyon, one of the two finalist clubs, of its star goalkeeper Carlos Mutti.

The Uruguayan, engaged in the foreign legion is mobilized on the do a month earlier.

The player has, of course, benefited from exceptional permission to participate in this final, but the story goes that he declined, preferring to fight with his brothers in arms, the same day.

Carlos Mutti died in action on August 26, 1918, in the Somme.

The French Embassy in Uruguay paid tribute to him in 2018 by placing a commemorative plaque in front of the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.
