Since the start of the health crisis, suicide attempts among young people and adolescents have only increased.

This is what the latest monthly mental health bulletin, published by Public Health France, reveals.

In three months, 6,400 emergency visits were recorded.

Figures that reveal dramatic situations.

Between January and March 2022, emergency room visits for suicide attempts by 15-24 year olds jumped 27% compared to last year.

In three months, this represents 6,400 emergency room visits.

The increase in the number of suicidal gestures has continued since 2020 and the start of the health crisis.

Over the whole of 2021 there were nearly 23,800, that is 6,500 more attempts than two years ago.

Consultations for suicidal thoughts are also on the rise, they almost doubled between 2020 and 2021.

Young girls are mostly affected by suicide attempts: the ratio is about five girls for one boy.

In France, among 15-24 year olds, there are between 300 and 350 deaths by suicide each year.

After road accidents, it is the second leading cause of death in this age group.

France has one of the highest suicide rates in Europe.

Poor mental health

According to the same report, the mental health of young people has deteriorated throughout the territory.

Outside of hospitals, in the SOS Médecins network, researchers have noted an increase in medical acts for anxiety among 18-24 year olds and an increase in acts for depression and behavioral problems among those aged 25 and over.

The organization announces that it will continue its youth awareness campaign, initiated in June 2021. #JenParleA, the name of the campaign, will continue until June.
