In 2009, the prison in Härnösand was closed down - but in 2020 it was clear that the prison would be reopened because the Swedish Prison and Probation Service needed more places.

Since then, the prison has undergone an extensive renovation to re-adapt to prison operations.

On Friday, the prison was inaugurated again and soon the first inmates are expected to arrive in Härnösand.

In total, the institution will accommodate 87 places.

- These new places are a very welcome addition to our prison capacity, says the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's Director General Martin Holmgren in a press release.

The inmates are offered, among other things, studies, influence programs, sewing, carpentry and laundry at the institution.

- In this way, we give them the best possible conditions for reintegration into society, says Radomir Sarkan.

The prison institution means 87 jobs and 20 annual substitutes to run the business all year round.
