Today, oil imports are very important for the EU's transport sector, which accounts for about 60% of oil use.

The supply of oil is also important in industry.

- It is not easy to change Russian oil, but it is theoretically possible.

But it will require an incredible effort, says Per Högselius, professor of technical history at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).

Sweden's oil imports

Swedish imports of Russian oil are small, about 8 percent in 2021. Sweden also takes all oil deliveries via ship, which makes Sweden flexible in the choice of producer.

But other countries will have a harder time choking on Russian oil.

- Some European countries that will find it very difficult to stop buying Russian oil.

You are dependent on Russian oil deliveries via land and do not have the opportunity for offshore oil, says Rebecka Bergholtz, analyst at the Swedish Energy Agency.

Russian oil from China?

If the EU embargo passes, countermeasures are expected from Russia on, among other things, natural gas deliveries.

At the same time, Russian oil supplies to China and the rest of Asia will grow in importance and may create unusual problems.

- How should European buyers be able to ensure that they do not buy Russian oil from a third country instead?

Such questions will be very interesting, says Rebecka Bergholtz, analyst at the Swedish Energy Agency.

Russia is far from the only country from which oil flows into Europe.
