A pastor in his forties died on Tuesday evening in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni in western Guyana.

Shortly after 10 p.m., "two or three" people opened fire in his direction, said Yves Le Clair, public prosecutor of Cayenne.

"His two sons, who came to help him, were injured but their lives are not in danger," he added.

The pastor succumbed shortly after his attack.

Five other people were also injured in circumstances that remain to be established.

The church where he officiated goes up in smoke

A few hours after the shooting, between 2 and 3 a.m., the evangelical church where the pastor used to officiate was set on fire.

Vehicles parked near the scene were also in flames.

“We wonder if the fire did not spread from a car to the place of worship,” commented Yves Le Clair.

In yesterday's tragedy, I lost a man of faith, Pastor KALLOE who supported me in my political battles.

I salute his memory, my sincere condolences to his family and to his faithful.

Speedy recovery to the injured.

May the perpetrators be found quickly.

A delegation from the National Council of Evangelicals of France (CNEF), traveling to Guyana, had welcomed the pastor earlier in the day for a meeting in the town of Mana.

“He had been very active,” recalled Clément Diedrichs, director of the CNEF.

On Twitter, the LREM deputy for the second constituency, Lénaïck Adam, saluted the memory of the pastor: “I lost a man of faith (…) who supported me in my political fights”.
