The purposeful work of the F – 6 school in recent years has yielded results.

From being at the bottom in terms of results compared to other Eskilstuna schools, they have now placed themselves somewhere in the middle.

The measure that is most interesting is the proportion of students who pass in the subjects that lead to upper secondary school eligibility.

In just three years, that figure has risen from 19 to 73 percent.

The school describes the success journey as a seven-stage rocket where, among other things, they introduced supervision of unqualified teachers, recruited more qualified teachers, introduced a dual teacher system in Swedish teaching and began to assess more students in their mother tongue - regardless of whether they are newcomers or born in Sweden.

"Includes as language support"

To assess students' knowledge, language tutors are used: staff who speak the student's mother tongue if the students, for example, are stronger in Somali or Arabic than in Swedish.

The two languages ​​are common at school, where around 95 percent of the students have a mother tongue other than Swedish.

- If it is a test in math with students who have Arabic as a mother tongue, the language tutor is present at the test as language support and when it is text assignments.

So she can translate them into Arabic so the students understand, and find it easier to cope.

In some cases, they can even answer in Arabic, says pre-service teacher Johanna Jedborg.
