An unusual military ceremony took place on Friday in Vicenza, a city in northern Italy.

And for good reason, the guest of honor at the event was a 90-year-old lady who had her birthday cake stolen by American soldiers after their victory over German forces in World War II, report our colleagues from CNN.

A little girl hiding in her attic

Meri Mion was only 13 when fighting broke out between Germans and US Army soldiers in the village of San Pietro, not far from Vicenza.

A total of 19 American soldiers had been killed or wounded in this battle which ultimately saw the Allies prevail.

While the fighting raged, Meri Mion hid in the attic of the farmhouse where she resided with her mother.

A cake and a birthday song

Once the city was liberated, his mother had decided to make him a cake to celebrate his birthday.

Once the pastry was done, she put it on a windowsill to cool.

And that's when American soldiers stole it.

Thus, 77 years after this misadventure, Meri Mion was the guest of honor of a military ceremony for which the soldiers of the 88th infantry division of the American army had of course planned a cake as well as a song of birthday interpreted in English and Italian.
