Swedbank was hit by a major IT crash on Thursday night.

An update to a system went wrong and for many customers it suddenly looked like they had a minus on their accounts.

Exploited by fraudsters

The bank's customer service and social media were flooded with worried people who could not buy food or pay bills.

Only one day after the problems did Swedbank state that it had been resolved.

“The basic problem is solved and corrected, but there are consequences that can affect customers.

There are transactions that are not completed after the corrections.

This can make customers see a value that is perceived as incorrect ", the bank writes on Monday.

The bank now warns that fraudsters are taking advantage of the situation around the disturbances by calling customers and pretending to be from Swedbank.

- We never urge customers to give out account information, card information, BankID or anything that is personal information to someone who calls.

The bank does not work that way, says Unni Jerndal, senior adviser at Swedbank to SVT.

She urges the victim to say no and end the conversation.

Contact via social media

It also happens that Swedbank customers are contacted by fraudsters via social media.

According to Unni Jerndal, the exact extent of the fraud is difficult to estimate, other than that these are "clear signals".

- It is important for customers to know that all contacts with the bank go through our digital channels, customer centers or via offices.

The bank does not call and offer help, she says.
