"

The war in Ukraine

has increased the risks of the project

," said the Finnish-majority consortium leading the construction of a nuclear reactor in northern

Finland

.

In a statement, he points out that Rosatom's subsidiary, the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency, involved in the RAOS Project "

has been unable to mitigate these risks

".

This means that the cooperation with RAOS Project is over with immediate effect (...) and that the work on the Hanhikivi-1 site

" with the Russian group is over, announced Fennovoima, a compound two-thirds owned by Finnish companies and 34% by Rosatom.

The Finnish government had already announced, the day after the military offensive in Ukraine, that it was going to reassess the project, one of the main industrial projects involving a Russian company in

the European Union.

This project, estimated at 7.5 billion euros, concerned the construction of a 1,200 megawatt reactor at Pyhajöki, in northern Finland.

Ongoing since 2010, it had already suffered from numerous delays and uncertainties.

The latest schedule announced last year by Fennovoima as part of its building permit application aimed to start construction in 2023 and commissioning in 2029.

The decision to cancel the contract with Rosatom "

is not taken lightly

 ", assures the consortium.

In such a large project there are significant complexities and decisions are only made after thorough assessments

,” says Fennovoima.
