The reform of the status of detained workers comes into force on May 1.

The law was enacted last winter as part of the law for confidence in the judiciary.

Essential changes to bring the rights of working prisoners closer to ordinary law.

May Day marks a major change for inmates in correctional facilities.

Several measures of the reform of work in detention come into force this Sunday in order to grant new rights to prisoners.

First of all, the employment contract is now called a prison employment contract, for a fixed or indefinite period.

But it is above all the rights associated with this contract that are changing: now, all inmate workers contribute to unemployment insurance.

He will therefore be able to benefit from his rights when he leaves prison - which was not the case until now.

The same goes for daily allowances in the event of a professional accident or maternity leave.

The detained person will now be entitled to a personal training account (CPF).

Work in prisons against the risk of recidivism

A voluntary detainee will also be able to pass job interviews with employers and will be able to apply.

It should be noted that only a reason of security can be opposed to a prisoner who would like to work.

Today only a third of prisoners work in France.

On the other hand, still no paid leave or compensation in the event of sick leave.

The goal is to get as close as possible to what exists outside the prison environment to promote reintegration and prepare for release.
