A guard stationed at the entrance to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank was shot dead on Friday, according to the Israeli military and rescue service.

In a statement, the military said that the suspected perpetrators had disappeared from the scene in a car and that roads nearby were closed in the hunt for them.

The Palestinian terrorist movement Hamas, whose political branch controls the Gaza Strip, praised the attack and called it a heroic act.

Palestinians shot dead

Palestinian health officials say a 20-year-old Palestinian man was also killed in the West Bank late Friday.

He is said to have been shot dead in clashes with Israeli forces.

It was also messy at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem earlier on Friday, but no one was seriously injured.

The last few weeks have been tense in the area.

The Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and the Jewish Passover Passover are celebrated at the same time.

About 300 Palestinians have been injured in recent weeks' clashes.

Unarmed in war

Earlier this week, about 250,000 Muslims gathered on and around Temple Mount for prayer at night, to celebrate the culmination of Ramadan laylat al-qadr.

Then no violence took place.

One year ago, the conflict degenerated into an eleven-day war between Israel and armed Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip.

Israel claims that such groups as Hamas and Islamic Jihad are active in and around Jerusalem and must therefore intervene.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has emphasized that Israel wants to maintain the status quo that, according to agreements, should prevail in the area, which means, among other things, that only Muslims can pray there.
