On Friday night, a powerful tornado pulled through the city of Wichita in the US state of Kansas and the worst affected is the city of Andover a few miles east of Wichita.

More than 950 buildings are said to have stood in the way of the tornado.

"We have many buildings in Andover that have been badly damaged," said Chad Russell, the city's fire chief during a press conference, CNN reports.

But despite the major property damage, only a handful were reported injured on Saturday morning.

But it will take years for the area to recover, says Russel.

- Unfortunately, we have been through this before.

More than 20,000 are said to have been without power as a result of the tornado, writes the BBC.

Clips and photos show destroyed homes, overturned cars and debris from the storm.
