A man was taken into police custody after the assault on Saturday in Bordeaux of an off-duty police officer, in front of his family, we learned from several sources.

The victim, a policeman from Bordeaux in his fifties, suffered from multiple bruises, the consequences of kicks and punches received, and a major wound to the scalp, following a bottle thrown from the part of the aggressor, explained to AFP a police union source.

Arrested two hours after the assault

According to a police source, the alleged attacker believed that the civil servant, who was walking with his wife and children in the early afternoon, had made fun of him and he got angry.

The officer took out his police card.

The man then "saw red", "beat him on the ground" and "broke a bottle on his head".

The alleged attacker fled and was arrested two hours later in Lormont, in the suburbs of Bordeaux, according to the same source.

He was placed in police custody for "violence with a weapon", the glass bottle, the prosecution told AFP, who did not wish to immediately report the circumstances of the attack.

A witness who tried to intervene during the attack was injured by a shard of glass in the calf, according to the police source.
