Prince Andrew received another blow yesterday, after he lost an honorary freedom award from York, amid calls for his duchy to be withdrawn.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of the motion, which was made after the civil sexual assault case against him, Virginia Joffrey, was settled in the United States.

He was the Queen's son to Elizabeth, had lost his military titles and royal patronage, and would no longer use the title of His Royal Highness.

He is currently stripped of the honorary title, which he received in 1987 as a wedding gift from York.

City councilors called for Prince Andrew to be stripped of his title as Duke of York, thus ending what business councilman Aisling Mawson called his "association with this city".

The "freedom of the city" is awarded for the appreciation of outstanding service by residents, distinguished persons, and royalty.

Other award winners include the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and Dame Judi Dench.

He told members of the York Council that Andrew was the first person to be stripped of the award.

York Council's Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Communities, Daryl Smalley, said the Honorary Liberty of York "is the highest honor we, as a city, can bestow upon those who represent the best of York.

This honor is given to many eminent personalities who carry him with pride and responsibility,” he said, adding, “After the Queen stripped him of his military roles and royal patronage, we believe it is right to remove all ties that still link Prince Andrew to our great city.”

Smalley added, "I have been pleased to see members of the Council on all sides support this proposal and make clear that it is no longer appropriate for Prince Andrew to represent York and its residents."
