After 77 years... an Italian woman compensated for a cake stolen by soldiers during World War II

The US Army gave a cake to an Italian woman, instead of a cake that American soldiers stole from her 77 years ago when she put it by her window.

According to the British "BBC" website, Meri Myon, 90, was 13 years old when her village of San Pietro, near the city of Vicenza, northern Italy, witnessed a battle between American forces and German soldiers.

The woman said that her mother made her a birthday cake, but that opportunistic and probably hungry Americans stole it.

Myeon added that she will share the replacement cake with her relatives.

She said, "We will have this dessert with all my family, and I remember this wonderful day that I will never forget."

The US army presented the cake at a ceremony held yesterday in the Giardini Salvi area of Vicenza, in the presence of members of the army, local officials and a number of residents.

"It makes me feel good," said Sgt. Peter Wallis, who handed over the cake, though it was "a little embarrassing" to exchange stolen merchandise.

During the ceremony, Colonel Matthew Gumlak, commander of the US Army garrison in Italy, spoke about the fighting between US and German forces in Vicenza in 1945.
