CNN quoted a Pentagon report that US forces left behind in Afghanistan more than $7 billion worth of military equipment when they withdrew last August.

The report - which the Pentagon submitted to Congress - said that the Department of Defense had no plans to return to Afghanistan "to recover or destroy this equipment."

The United States transferred that equipment to the Afghan government over 16 years, but it is "now in a country controlled by the same enemy that the United States has been trying to expel for the past two decades: the Taliban."

The United States provided $18.6 billion in equipment to the Afghan military and security forces from 2005 to August 2021. And $7.12 billion worth of equipment remained in Afghanistan after the final withdrawal of U.S. forces.

According to the report, this equipment includes aircraft, military vehicles, ammunition, communication devices, and more.

The sheer value of the equipment has drawn harsh criticism from members of Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
